Belinda Carlisle Drops First Single & Music Video from Upcoming Album 'Once Upon a Time in California'

One of the biggest pop-rock stars of the '80s is back—this time with a California breeze and a brand-new music video.

Belinda Carlisle has just unveiled the first single and music video from her highly anticipated new studio album, Once Upon a Time in California, out August 29, 2025 via Demon Music. The lead track? A stunning, soul-stirring cover of “The Air That I Breathe,” originally made famous by The Hollies.

Produced by longtime collaborator Gabe Lopez, the song breathes fresh life into the beloved classic while staying true to its haunting beauty. The video itself is a visual nod to Carlisle’s early solo work—rich in dreamy West Coast imagery, warm hues, and her signature elegance.

“This song has always been one of my very favorites growing up,” Belinda shared. “It was on a list I made years ago of songs I’d love to cover. During the pandemic, I did these ‘Saturday Serenades’ on Instagram and sang it karaoke-style—it got such an amazing response that I knew it had to be part of this album. I absolutely love how the video turned out—it really feels like a throwback to my early days.”

The track sets the tone for what’s to come on Once Upon a Time in California—a heartfelt journey through the vintage pop and soft rock sounds that shaped Belinda’s California childhood. The album features 10 covers of beloved classics, including songs by Burt Bacharach, the Carpenters, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and Harry Nilsson, all reimagined through Carlisle’s unmistakable voice.

Following the success of her 2023 EP Kismet, this new project finds Belinda Carlisle reflecting on the golden age of California pop and paying tribute to the records that helped shape her musical path.

But for now, all eyes—and ears—are on “The Air That I Breathe.” It's a reminder that decades into her career, Belinda Carlisle still knows how to make a moment feel timeless.
