How did you decide to start your brand?
Sunglasses are my favorite accessory, it can compliment any outfit night or day. I was known in college for wearing them at night during parties at bars. I loved the stares and the mystery it left people with after seeing me. Sunglasses to me are a conversation starter.
Obviously sunglasses are a staple in everyone's wardrobe. What makes your line stand out amongst competitors?
I believe my line $tunnas by May is different because there is something for everyone. The names are catchy, the shades can be dressed up or down. When I think of the word "Stunna" it doesn’t always have to mean ‘flashy.' To me it means confidence. That’s what I want people to feel wearing my shades. Not just cute, but confident.
Are you looking to expand your brand? If so, how do you see it growing in the future?
I want to keep it sunglasses for now, I want to take risks and be able to have my customers enjoy my products. $tunnas by May isn’t just going to have up-to-date fashionable eyewear, but vintage eyewear as well, especially because 90’s fashion is always relevant.
The world is watching and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. How important is it to you to be a black female creator in today's society?
I think it’s very important. One of my favorite facts by Forbes is “Black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S”. With that being said, in today’s society realizing the end all be all isn’t just the high paying get rich jobs, and using your creativity can get you far especially if you work hard.
Who or what is the inspiration behind your brand?
My inspiration behind my brand was my goal to ‘turn pain into purpose’. It sounds silly but heartbreak or misfortune just inspires me to do something I kept putting it off. And in this instance, I wound up starting a business that is doing amazing just in time for the summer.
